An urban market in San Jose was offered $6 million dollars by the city to invest for the benefit of the market. The money has not been approved yet but the city expects the money to go through. The market is owned partly by the former mayor of San Jose, Tom McEnery and his family and is located at the intersection of San Pedro Street and Santa Clara Street.
The city held a city council meeting concerning the money going to the market. There's no real reason the money should get denied. The money would go towards new buildings such as a neighborhood of shops or residential towers.
I think the money should go through because I don't really see how the money could be used otherwise. It could probably be used towards paying teachers and cross guards but I don't think it would really make much of a difference because those two problems are state-wide and not just in San Jose.

The "AVODAH" Website
Religious affiliations, practices, and beliefs can shape advocacy. The teachings in religious studies and preachers and whatnot tell the citizens of the religious following to do certain things to satisfy the way of the religion. In the AVODAH program, "Jews in their 20s [are recruited] from across North America to spend a year working on urban poverty issues as full-time employees in local non-profit organizations" (117). People of the same religion banded together to fight poverty. Not only did they band together to fight poverty directly, they banded together to make the program to fight.
Judaism usually has followers go on a mission to change the world and Mark Goodman states that he didn't understand how it all worked until he joined AVODAH and worked with a foster care agency. He started to learn how communities of people contribute to themselves and to others by helping each other and other communites out.
One example of how religious affiliations can shape advocacy is within both me and current classmate Tyler. We went through Catholic Confirmation together and our program required us to do 20 hours of community service. It shaped us and helped us to see that Catholics and Christians in general are out there to help others out and we really took a turn for the best when we went through the hours.

analyzing editorial & opinion pieces
Another long and boring chapter from the great book of Compose, Design, Advocate.
Just kidding. =]
Well this chapter differs from our previous lesson from chapter 14. Chapter 13 is analyzing editorial & opinion pieces instead of analyzing the essays of chapter 14.
When analyzing editorial & opinion pieces, the rhetorical appeal of ethos plays a very important part. Ethos is a moral competence or complete moral character within the reader. Since, the writings are more opinionated, the reader relies more on a strong sense of morals rather than a strong set of knowledge when in analytical mode.
When analyzing something, morals is a very strong suit to be played. For example, some people with low morals think racism is funny. It's a matter of strong opinion but to normal people with moral, racism is not funny at all.
For example, I think I'm On A Boat by The Lonely Island is super hilarious but to people with a different level ethos and a different set of moral, they may think it's not funny at all. This example plays into writing too. The reader must analyze with the morals playing as an analytical filter.
I can't believe I used I'm On A Boat as an example. =]

San Jose task force member proposes moratorium on use of public-drunkenness law
Here is the link.
The San Jose Police Department is under suspicion of misusing the San Jose public-drunkenness law to arrest people of their choosing. This has led to racial profiling (a majority which is people of Latino descent) and false arrests. A task force is proposing a suspension on of the public-drunkenness law.
This is one of the examples of how the SJPD can abuse their power as law enforcement. The police could beat you if you some how "resisted" arrest. The police could also arrest you if you are under the suspicion of a crime. The police can do anything in their power if they believe you are really commiting a crime.
The police could also make false arrests just because you look like you're going to do something, look a certain way, or of a certain race. I think it's terrible and the police should shape up and the government should help.
In the article, it says the City Council do anything about it but prioritize what laws to enforce. Basically if they don't prioritize the public-drunkenness law highly, the police will focus on other laws and the racial profiling and whatnot should decrease.
Sometimes the police are abusive with their power. For example, tonight a cop stopped in the middle of the road to talk to another cop and it was completely blocking the road. The cop took his sweet, sweet time to finish his conversation and finally drive off. The cop wasn't a very good driver for you information.
Other people have problems with the cops too so I'm not alone. A man sued the police force for false arrest and racial profiling.
Here is the link.
Cops are stupid sometimes. I guess they just love their power so much.
I hate cops.

Print Essay
DA's office loses job of representing foster youths
S.J. Nonprofit to provide lawyers in family court
Located on the San Jose Mercury News Newspaper dated February 10th, 2009.
Written by Karen de Sa.
I actually had a hard time finding an essay on San Jose that was printed so to my pleasant surprise, my roommate Kenneth Tadeo rolls in with a newspaper and I gladly share it with him with a big smile on my face. I'll happily take what I could get.
The essay explains that the District Attorney's office will have it's foster youth division replaced by a San Jose nonprofit organization. This leads the dependency court to a complete overhaul. The list of benefits includes: another courtroom will be added, a commissioner is replaced by two judges, investigators and experts involved, social workers for parents, growth in attorney salaries, more kids will be present in court.
The main problem in the essay is that district attorneys usually try to get the children away from their homes and whatever advice the courts give them. This is a problem and is remedied by completely removing district attorneys completely from the dependency court.
"Making detailed observations, especially observations that will lead you to useful questions, takes practice." The article was very well researched and observations played a very big role in the article. This helped persuade me towards the author's side and helped me realize the big idea of the whole writing.

Online Essay
Police: Man found dead in South San Jose was homicide victim
San Jose Mercury News official website:
Here's the link.
I picked this particular essay because the title caught my eye rather quickly. Homicide is a very touchy subject and when it hits pretty close to home, it scares the hell out of me. I've had family members pass away peacefully and that always got to me but I've never had to lose a family member to a homicide. That would be too much for me to bear.
Just as the title explicitly says, the article states that a man was found dead but not just from natural causes, the man was victim to a murder. The poor man's name was
Fisaha Isaac Gebremichael and he died at the very early age of 25. The man died to a gunshot and it's known that no gangs were involved in the killing.
The essay was really easy to analyze because everything is said so clearly. From chapter 14, I took a quotation from the step by step process. This is step 1: "What are the piece's purpose, audience, and context?" The piece's purpose is simple: to inform the people that a citizen of San Jose was found dead by the police. The audience is the people of San Jose or whoever reads the San Jose Mercury News. The context is that killing is bad and people should not die due to violence like that. This helped me understand that the essay played on my emotions because I can't stand seeing stories of death. The essay got to the point quickly and shortly and did the job very well.

Aboard the Ideological Hot Air Balloon
Nicole Converse Livengood, Ph.D. Candidate, Purdue University
“Aboard the Ideological Hot Air Balloon” is an essay about the doubt of students towards academic blogs. The professor first implements academic blogging into the first year composition class and the students do it simply to get the grade for the course. Livengood states that the students struggle to make the writing their own meaning they don’t really express themselves.
This is my favorite essay because it relates to my own doubts towards academic blogs. I’m not sure if this will help my writing or it will simply just be an assignment to me. Only time will tell.
