San Jose task force member proposes moratorium on use of public-drunkenness law

Here is the link.

The San Jose Police Department is under suspicion of misusing the San Jose public-drunkenness law to arrest people of their choosing. This has led to racial profiling (a majority which is people of Latino descent) and false arrests. A task force is proposing a suspension on of the public-drunkenness law.

This is one of the examples of how the SJPD can abuse their power as law enforcement. The police could beat you if you some how "resisted" arrest. The police could also arrest you if you are under the suspicion of a crime. The police can do anything in their power if they believe you are really commiting a crime.

The police could also make false arrests just because you look like you're going to do something, look a certain way, or of a certain race. I think it's terrible and the police should shape up and the government should help.

In the article, it says the City Council do anything about it but prioritize what laws to enforce. Basically if they don't prioritize the public-drunkenness law highly, the police will focus on other laws and the racial profiling and whatnot should decrease.

Sometimes the police are abusive with their power. For example, tonight a cop stopped in the middle of the road to talk to another cop and it was completely blocking the road. The cop took his sweet, sweet time to finish his conversation and finally drive off. The cop wasn't a very good driver for you information.

Other people have problems with the cops too so I'm not alone. A man sued the police force for false arrest and racial profiling.

Cops are stupid sometimes. I guess they just love their power so much.
I hate cops.

  1. This post makes a lot of sense. I like your topic because i really do think the police abuse their powers. I hate it how they stop you and the first thing they say is if you can blow in their flashlight to check if you are drunk. Then they end up telling you your light is out or your break light isn't working. They assume you are drunk and i think that is abusing their powers. The racial profiling and false arrests are so stupid.

You mention race in both of your posts. I think that could be at the center of your research project. Take it on -- don't pick something tame -- pick a real subject like racism in San Jose and just get into it!
